📝 1st Grade Math: Telling Time Study Notes
Telling time helps us know when to do things like eat lunch, play, or go to bed! Clocks show us the time.
⏰ What is a Clock?
There are two main types of clocks you will see:
- Analog Clock: This clock has hands that move around a face with numbers.
- Digital Clock: This clock shows numbers directly to tell the time.
🕰️ Analog vs. Digital Clocks
Here's a quick look at how they are different:
| Feature | Analog Clock | Digital Clock |
|---|---|---|
| How it shows time | Moving hands | Numbers directly |
| Numbers shown | 1 through 12 | Up to 4 digits |
| Example | Clock with hands | "3:00" on a screen |
⏳ Parts of an Analog Clock
An analog clock has numbers and special hands that point to the numbers.
🔢 The Numbers
- Most analog clocks have numbers \(1\) through \(12\) around the edge.
- These numbers help us know the hour.
🕒 The Hour Hand (Short Hand)
- The hour hand is the shorter hand on the clock.
- It points to the number that tells us the hour.
- It moves slowly around the clock.
minuto The Minute Hand (Long Hand)
- The minute hand is the longer hand on the clock.
- It tells us the minutes.
- When the minute hand points to the \(12\), it means it's the beginning of a new hour (0 minutes past the hour).
- When the minute hand points to the \(6\), it means it's half past the hour (30 minutes past the hour).
🕰️ Telling Time to the Hour
When the time is exactly on the hour, we say "o'clock".
- The minute hand (long hand) will always point directly to the \(12\).
- The hour hand (short hand) will point directly to the number for that hour.
Example: If the hour hand points to \(3\) and the minute hand points to \(12\), the time is 3 o'clock.
In digital time, this looks like 3:00.
⏰ Telling Time to the Half-Hour
When the time is half past the hour, it means 30 minutes have passed since the hour started.
- The minute hand (long hand) will always point directly to the \(6\).
- The hour hand (short hand) will be exactly halfway between two numbers. It will be past the hour it just was, and moving towards the next hour.
Example: If the minute hand points to \(6\) and the hour hand is halfway between \(3\) and \(4\), the time is half past 3.
In digital time, this looks like 3:30.
📌 Key Takeaway: Hour Hand Movement
Remember that the hour hand moves slowly. For "half past", it's not pointing exactly at a number, but between two numbers.
⏱️ Matching Analog and Digital Time
It's important to be able to read both types of clocks!
| Analog Clock Description | Digital Time |
|---|---|
| Hour hand at \(7\), Minute hand at \(12\) | 7:00 |
| Hour hand between \(7\) and \(8\), Minute hand at \(6\) | 7:30 |
| Hour hand at \(10\), Minute hand at \(12\) | 10:00 |
| Hour hand between \(10\) and \(11\), Minute hand at \(6\) | 10:30 |
