Have you ever wondered how living things get the energy they need to grow and move? It all starts with the sun! Plants use sunlight to make their own food, making them producers. Animals that eat plants are called primary consumers, like a rabbit munching on grass. Then, animals that eat other animals are secondary or tertiary consumers. This flow of energy from one living thing to another is called a food chain. It shows a single path of energy transfer. But nature is usually more complicated than a simple line. Most animals eat more than one type of food, and many plants are eaten by different animals. This creates a complex network of interconnected food chains, which we call a food web. A food web shows all the different feeding relationships in an ecosystem, illustrating how energy flows through multiple paths. Understanding food chains and food webs helps us see how all living things are connected and how changes to one part of an ecosystem can affect everything else.
