Our solar system is a vast neighborhood in space, with the Sun at its center. The Sun is a star that provides light and heat, which are forms of energy. Planets, moons, asteroids, and comets all orbit the Sun.
The Solar System 🪐
The Sun: Our Star
The Sun is the largest object in our solar system and is made of hot gases. It is the primary source of light and heat for Earth. This energy travels through space as radiation.
The Planets 🌍
There are eight planets in our solar system, each with unique characteristics. They orbit the Sun in a predictable path called an orbit.
- Inner Planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. These are rocky and smaller.
- Outer Planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. These are gas giants and much larger.
Other Celestial Bodies
- Moons: Natural satellites that orbit planets. Earth has one moon.
- Asteroids: Rocky objects that orbit the Sun, mostly found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.
- Comets: Icy bodies that orbit the Sun and develop a tail as they get closer.
Energy in the Solar System ☀️
Energy is the ability to do work or cause change. In the solar system, the Sun is the main source of energy.
Types of Energy from the Sun
- Light Energy: Allows us to see and is used by plants for photosynthesis.
- Heat Energy (Thermal Energy): Warms the planets and drives weather patterns.
Energy Transfer
Energy from the Sun travels to Earth through space. This transfer happens through radiation. When this energy reaches Earth, it can be absorbed or reflected. For example, the ground absorbs sunlight and gets warm, while clouds reflect sunlight.
Photosynthesis: Plants Using Solar Energy
Plants use light energy from the Sun to make their own food through a process called photosynthesis. This is a crucial way solar energy is converted into chemical energy that supports life on Earth.

Energy Transformation
Energy can change from one form to another. For instance, light energy from the Sun is transformed into chemical energy stored in plants during photosynthesis.
Conservation of Energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed from one form to another. This is known as the law of conservation of energy.
Earth's Energy Budget
Earth receives energy from the Sun, but it also radiates energy back into space. The balance between incoming and outgoing energy helps maintain Earth's temperature.
