📝 3rd Grade English (ELA): Like Eating, Love Playing, Enjoy Working: Affirmative and Negative Study Notes
Like Eating, Love Playing, Enjoy Working: Affirmative and Negative
In English, we use verbs like "like," "love," and "enjoy" to talk about things we find pleasant or fun. We can also talk about things we don't like. This is called making sentences affirmative (saying something is true) or negative (saying something is not true).
Affirmative Sentences
Affirmative sentences say that we do like, love, or enjoy something. We use the verbs directly with the subject.
- I like reading books.
- She loves playing soccer.
- We enjoy drawing pictures.
- They like pizza.
Negative Sentences
To make a sentence negative, we usually add "do not" (or the contraction "don't") before the verb "like." For "love" and "enjoy," we also use "do not" or "don't."
- I do not like (don't like) homework.
- He does not love (doesn't love) waking up early.
- They do not enjoy (don't enjoy) loud noises.
- She does not like (doesn't like) broccoli.
Notice that for "he," "she," and "it," we use "does not" (or "doesn't"). For "I," "you," "we," and "they," we use "do not" (or "don't").
Using "Do" and "Does"
The helping verbs "do" and "does" are important for making negative sentences. They help us show that the action is not happening or not liked.
- Do you like ice cream? Yes, I do.
- Does he enjoy the park? No, he does not (doesn't).
Practice Examples
Let's look at some more examples:
- Affirmative: My sister likes to sing.
- Negative: My sister does not like (doesn't like) to sing.
- Affirmative: We love going to the beach.
- Negative: We do not love (don't love) going to the beach.
- Affirmative: The cat enjoys napping in the sun.
- Negative: The cat does not enjoy (doesn't enjoy) napping in the sun.
Key Differences: Like, Love, Enjoy
While all these verbs express positive feelings, there can be a slight difference in intensity:
- Like: A general feeling of pleasure.
- Love: A very strong feeling of liking.
- Enjoy: To get pleasure from something.
In negative sentences, the structure is the same for all three.
Summary Table
| Verb | Affirmative Example | Negative Example |
|---|---|---|
| Like | I like dogs. | I don't like dogs. |
| Love | She loves to read. | She doesn't love to read. |
| Enjoy | We enjoy games. | We don't enjoy games. |
Remember to use "do not" or "don't" for "I," "you," "we," and "they." Use "does not" or "doesn't" for "he," "she," and "it" when making negative sentences with "like," "love," and "enjoy."
