1. Bir metnin ana fikri (main idea), o metinde en çok bahsedilen ve metnin genelinde ne anlatıldığını belirten temel düşüncedir.

2. İngilizce bir metnin ana fikrini bulmak için sadece ilk kelimeye bakmak yeterlidir.

3. Metindeki 'supporting details' (yardımcı fikirler), ana fikri destekleyen ve onu açıklayan küçük detaylardır.
