✍🏻 6th Grade English (ELA): Author's Purpose And Tone

Welcome, 6th graders! Today, we're diving into two super important ideas that will help you become amazing readers: Author's Purpose and Tone. Author's Purpose is simply WHY an author writes something. Think of the P.I.E. acronym: authors write to Persuade you to believe something, Inform you about a topic, or Entertain you with a story. Understanding this helps you know what to expect from the text. For example, a textbook informs, an advertisement persuades, and a novel entertains. Tone, on the other hand, is the author's ATTITUDE towards their subject or audience. Just like you can tell if someone is happy, sad, serious, or humorous by their voice, you can tell an author's tone by their word choices and details. Is the writing lighthearted or somber? Excited or calm? Paying attention to these clues will deepen your understanding and make reading even more rewarding!
