✍🏻 6th Grade Earth Science: Volcanoes

Volcanoes are fascinating geological formations that erupt molten rock, ash, and gases from beneath the Earth's surface. Imagine a giant, fiery mountain that can spew out incredible amounts of material! These eruptions happen when pressure builds up deep inside the Earth, forcing magma (molten rock) to rise. When magma reaches the surface, it's called lava. Volcanoes come in different shapes and sizes, like the classic cone-shaped stratovolcanoes or the flatter shield volcanoes. Some volcanoes are active and erupt frequently, while others are dormant, meaning they haven't erupted in a long time but could again. Extinct volcanoes are those that scientists believe will never erupt again. Studying volcanoes helps us understand the powerful forces shaping our planet and can even provide valuable minerals and fertile soil after eruptions. They are a dramatic reminder of Earth's dynamic nature!
