Imagine you're at the top of a slide. You have stored energy, ready to go! This stored energy is called potential energy. It's the energy an object has because of its position or state. Think of a stretched rubber band or a ball held high in the air. Once you slide down, that potential energy transforms into motion! The energy of motion is called kinetic energy. The faster you move, the more kinetic energy you have. A rolling ball has kinetic energy, and so does a car driving down the road. These two types of energy are constantly changing into each other. When you climb back up the slide, you're gaining potential energy again. Understanding kinetic and potential energy helps us explain how things move and interact in the world around us, from a simple bouncing ball to complex machines.
